Artist Comments


I love roses. Especially the large, showy, densely-petalled varieties. They are also known as “cabbage” roses because of their globular shape. The British Isles are famous for their roses and the myriad varieties from antique to modern.

Capturing the delicacy of all of those petals in pen and ink is a challenge I can’t resist. Techniques used in this drawing are a combination of contour lines and cross-hatching. I usually prefer to show subjects as part of a scene rather than as studies without context…thus the edge-to-edge ink work.

Materials used: Pigma Micron pens, india ink and dip pens on Strathmore 500 plate bristol.
